The Numerous Activities Which You Can Accomplish in Key West, Florida
If you would like to go to a spot with fascinating culture, warm climate plus beaches, and are ready for an “away from it all” location, consider Key West, Florida. It is about 150 miles from Miami, and is going to take around 3.5 hours to drive to from there. That will make it a good deal nearer to Cuba which is only 90 miles distant. But it’s going to really feel like you’re in another world, as there is no spot within the United States like it.
Key West is a city on the island of Key West, that is about four miles long by two miles wide. Until 1912 it was very isolated, when Henry Flagler’s Florida East Coast Railway (FEC) had its opening. The Labor Day hurricane of 1935 destroyed the railroad, and the FEC determined not to reconstruct it. The U.S. government at that time rebuilt the route as a highway, opening it in 1938 as an extension of U.S. Highway 1.
When you decide to go there, provided you are a sun-lover and enjoy the water, this is going to be the spot for you. Here are some of the activities you can opt to do:
1. Fishing. You can have an excellent deep-sea fishing experience, as there are several private boats in addition to party boats to use. Flats’ fishing is also very popular at the Florida Keys. It involves no unique equipment or skill-set. You do not even need a boat. Just wade out in shallow water and then cast a line, and you are able to catch bonefish and tarpon, along with other fish which are routinely found in water that isn’t deep. You are not going to catch any prize fish, but there will be fish in those shallow waters. Or many decide to use a flatbed skiff.
2. Beaches. Naturally there are plentiful beaches, most of these on the south side of the island. Lifeguards arent there on the beaches, so swim without lifeguard protection. But although you will not find some of the Finest Beaches in Florida there, as they will be on the west coast of Florida, the calm blue waters and coastal reefs make it admired for snorkeling and swimming.
3. Diving and snorkeling. The waters in the vicinity of Key West present excellent snorkeling and diving experiences. There are a number of charters which book both divers and snorkelers, plus certification programs can be scheduled in many locations.
4. Golf. Key West contains an 18 hole public course which is located in beautiful tropical scenery. There will be a driving range, pro shop, restaurant and clubhouse.
5. Cultural experience This really is the thing most people feel sets Key West apart from some other holiday destinations. There is a great deal of history in the area, and museums to tell you about it. You can experience the city taking one of the trolleys or tour trains, or cruise out to the reef to experience the island from another perspective. Key West has always attracted people in the arts, and there are numerous art galleries showing local and worldwide talent.
